Music is without question a most powerful means of communication, and its ability to express and reflect life is a gift to our society. The Souls of Poor Folk is using this tremendously effective vehicle to create a dialogical space where questions can be asked and truth can be told about what is happening in this world below the poverty line. We received upwards of 100 submissions literally from around the world, in a variety of genres including R&B, folk, rap/hip-hop of different feels (traditional east coast, southern, etc), alternative rock, and techno. After an internal discernment process we selected the music that is featured on the CD.

About The Souls of Poor Folk

The Souls of Poor Folk is a joint effort by Greater Love Movement and Peace of Music that will engage listeners, viewers, and readers with thoughtful and challenging perspectives on the various aspects of poverty and homelessness in America. These messages are reaching audiences via the following vehicles: an original music compilation (CD), an original film documentary (DVD), a published collection of original essays, an interactive website, and a series of events featuring aforementioned materials. Through this coordinated effort, artists, scholars, social service providers, and other concerned citizens are reaching a large portion of our society and encouraging them to live their lives with care, concern, and remembrance of those who are far too often forgotten.
